Great Southwest Area Council is the sixth name for this council. It was originally Albuquerque Council (1918-1926), then Bernalillo County Council (1926-1927), Rio Grande Area Council (1927-1934), Northern New Mexico Council (1934-1955), Kit Carson Council (1955-1976). In 1982, "Area" was struck from the name and it became the Great Southwest Council 412.
